• Hello:
I’ve been away from my dashboard for a while and have made a terrible mistake. Having just changed my pen name, I wanted to change the url of my site. I went to the dashboard, clicked on Settings and everywhere it said patrick I changed it to britt. Everything is now haywire. The worst is that I can’t log in to get back into my dashboard and even when I was able to at first, it wouldn’t let me access any controls.

I’ve read the topics about changing urls but they don’t apply to me as I can’t get into the dashboard.

Hoping someone can help with this. Thanks in advance.
    Britt Vasarhelyi
p.s. I can access the website using the old url but it’s very different — different colors, spacing, etc.

  • You can change the urls back without dashboard access. One of the methods in these instructions will work. Using phpMyAdmin is pretty quick if you have that tool available to you.

Clayton, I hate to sound so ignorant but I don’t know what php and ftp are. It sounds like ftp would be better but I have no idea how I would “FTP to the site.” I’m really a novice at all this. I read the whole section on changing the site url before and came out glassy eyed.
Thanks for starting me off on this. Can you help me figure out the ftp please?
    Thanks,
    Britt

There is a good article on it located here: FTP Clients

You may also want to spend some time familiarizing yourself with the tools available to you in your hosts control panel. There is probably already a file manager that will allow you to access and modify your files, as well as tools to work with your database. It would not surprise me if phpMyAdmin was already available in your control panel. Most services also have FAQ and reference materials to guide you on how to use most of those features.

    Hi Clayton:
Thanks so much. Everything is back to normal now. I do have one question for you. I used PHPAdmin and when I went to change the urls at ‘home’ and ‘siteurl’, they were already the new name. I was afraid to leave them like that so I changed them to the old name. I still want to have them in the new name but I’m wondering if I change them back will I have the same problem again?
    Thanks again for your help.
    Britt
