From my understanding of it, that particular section of the Write interface is showing you what the current custom fields associated with your post are. Not duplicate information. If you are not looking at a post in particular, you should not have any default values.

See, that’s the thing, Cypher. If I edit an existing post then, yes, that’s what I see — and that makes sense. The value displayed is the value I chose for Source.
But I’m seeing this in every new, blank post. And it’s always Source=”BBC”.

Yes, every new post has a value in the custom field already. It’s always the same value (“BBC”). No, I’m not using an aggregator. (And, yes, I am using 1.5.1.)
Ah, well that’s not right..now do you see BBC for existing posts in addition to other sources, that is, do you see BBC on every post regardless of it being new or old? Or just on new posts or posts meant to have BBC?
Having not used the custom field extensively, I really can’t provide a lot of details or explanations.

Thanks, Denis, but I think you misunderstood my issue. I want the scary-looking custom fields. I just don’t understand what the UI is telling me. 😉

On existing posts that I edit, I see the existing value for Source. This makes sense to me. I’m being told what the existing value is and I have a chance to change it.
On new posts, the “existing field/value” area always shows “Source” = “BBC”. This doesn’t make sense to me because, of course, there shouldn’t yet be an “existing field/value”.
Should I log this as a bug? Can anyone else who uses custom fields confirm that there is a default value displayed in Write for new posts?
