Installing WordPress to domain with active content

    Hi everyone,

    I am wanting to redesign my website on my domain to a wordpress based design. I had a website built for me using html before and now I am wanting to switch to WordPress.

    My question is, How can I begin to work on and edit my new wordpress website without losing my active content on my domain? That way as I work on and edit my wordpress, my active site will remain active when people try to access it.

    Install wordpress in a folder and work on it while you still have html website in root.

    I have been working on my site in a folder – http://www.cowabungalife.com/wordpresstemplate

    How could I now switch it to my main site domain – http://www.cowabungalife.com

    Once you are ready to go live there two ways to use your wordpress and you find instructions here

    http://codex.wordpress.org/Giving_WordPress_Its_Own_Directory

    You will need to move your existing website in folder .

    I have videos on my website on how to do it click on name.

    Thank you again for the informative reply. I will be using both of those provided resources.

    However, prior to reading your post, I tried to bring over my new site to my desired domain root by doing the following in dashboard.

    Settings —> General

    I then changed the following boxes:

    WordPress Address (URL):
    Site Address (URL):

    From http://www.cowabungalife.com/wordpresstemplate to http://www.cowabungalife.com

    I realized this did not work, so I switched it back to /wordpresstemplate, but now I’m getting the following error message instead of the site I was building:

    “Notice: Undefined index: HTTP_REFERER in /home/cowabung/public_html/wordpresstemplate/wp-content/plugins/w3-total-cache/inc/define.php on line 355

    Notice: load_plugin_textdomain was called with an argument that is deprecated since version 2.7 with no alternative available. in /home/cowabung/public_html/wordpresstemplate/wp-includes/functions.php on line 3389

    Notice: Undefined variable: id in /home/cowabung/public_html/wordpresstemplate/wp-content/plugins/aweber-integration/om4-aweber.php on line 291

    Warning: Cannot modify header information – headers already sent by (output started at /home/cowabung/public_html/wordpresstemplate/wp-content/plugins/w3-total-cache/inc/define.php:355) in /home/cowabung/public_html/wordpresstemplate/wp-includes/pluggable.php on line 897″

    Is there a way to fix this to get back access to my dashboard and my work up to this point.

    change the folder in your website root, and work on that folder until you’ll finish !!!
