Admin User Privilages

Hi there. I am a new word press user and I am concerned about a user permission issue with new users. When new users sign up they are automatically given administration privilages and I am not sure how to change this. Is there a default somewhere when allowing new users to set up an account that will default them to contributor and not administrator? Any help provided will be appreciated. Thanks!
