How to add favicon to root folder?

    I want to add a favicon. I already created the favicon.ico file and understand where to put the code in header.php, but I am totally lost as to how to upload the file. I see that I have to add it to my root folder but have no idea where my root folder is or how to add something to it (someone else set up my site). Any chance I can get a step-by-step guide written so a 5 year old could understand it? Thanks a lot.

    ‘how to add a favicon to wordpress’

    and you will get more responses than you can shake a stick at! 🙂

    Thanks. The issue is that all of the “how to add a favicon” stuff I’ve seen assumes that you know what they mean when they tell you to use an FTP Client to upload the .ico file into the main folder.

    I don’t know how to use the FTP Client or where to find the main folder. I understand though if those questions are too complex to be answered on a support forum and would require more hands-on teaching.

    You need to ask your host for your FTP details, which usually consist of a hostname, username, password, and sometimes a directory. Ask your host specifically what the root directory is called. When you use the FTP details to connect to your site you may need to navigate to the root directory, or you may be plunked right into it by default. Your host is the one who can help with the specifics.

    You can also use the file manager in your hosts control panel to accomplish the same thing.

    The “main folder” is the directory where you installed all of your WordPress files.

    Here is some good basic info on FTP Clients

    [edit] …Filezilla seems to be the example of choice in that article, but there are many.
