What are requests for wp-admin/admin-ajax.php?

Hello,

In looking at the on-screen log for our web server, I notice a lot of http requests for:

http://www.mysite/myblog/wp-admin/admin-ajax.php

These requests are from external IP’s, meaning from site visitors.

Is this normal, or are these attempts to hack into our blog?
