Hi. I have tried to customise my permalinks so they have the page title on the extended URL, rather than a lot of nonsense. However, the page tabs on the site then don’t work. What am I doing wrong?

Try resetting your custom permalinks back to the default setting and deleting/renaming your WordPress .htaccess file. If that works, then try reading Using_Permalinks before setting a custom permalink structure again. Documentation: http://codex.wordpress.org/Using_Permalinks
