wp-prettyPhoto in WordPress 3.0.5

I have encountered conflicting instructions and am having trouble getting it working. There seems to be confusion regarding the wp & standalone versions. Combining the information, I have uploaded the plugin via ftp and activated it. I then tweaked the settings. When this didn’t work I went to the forums and followed the instructions found here:

adding the code to the header and footer files.

It is possible that this is a usage issue because it shows up with all of my other plugins — I just can’t find any way to access it and load it with any content.
