A google map feature came with the IT Residence theme, and worked fine for a few years. Now the map has gone dark, and there is a water mark across the map saying “For Development Purposes Only”. I reported this to Google Maps support and they provided me with an API key, because the one I was using was obsolete. But I don’t know where to put the key? Can anyone help?

That “For development purposes only” watermark shows up when Google rejects the API key behind the map, and the most common cause is that the Google Cloud project for that key has no billing account attached. Google requires billing to be enabled even though there is a monthly free usage allowance, so a map can work fine for years and then get blocked if the billing setup on the key lapses or was never completed.

Since the map used to work on an older theme, I would check these in the Google Cloud Console for the project that owns the key: a billing account is attached and active, the Maps JavaScript API is enabled, and any key restrictions still match your site (for example the domain entry under your current address). Then check in your theme’s map settings that it is using your own key and not a default or shared one that shipped with the theme, since shared keys get blocked quickly.

I cannot see your specific setup from here, but the billing status in the Cloud Console is the first thing to check. That watermark almost always points to a billing or key-restriction problem on the API side rather than anything wrong with the theme itself.
