Upcoming Event template format change in 3.8.x

I believe this problem started after updating to v3.8.x. I have a simple template to display upcoming events on our home page. The exact template code is:

{date}, {time}: {linking_title}

The problem is that there is a “carriage return” or “line break” being forced between the {time}: and the {linking_title}, so it’s doubling the size of the listed upcoming events. Previously they were all in one line, exactly like the above template code shows.

How can the extra line be removed, so events are listed one per line?
