Images not visible while editing posts after updating to WordPress 7

    Hi,

    After updating to WordPress 7, I noticed an issue when uploading images to a new post.

    When I create a new post and upload an image, the image does not appear in the editor. Instead, I just see the image name where the image should be.

    However, if I save the post as a draft, leave the editor, and then open the draft again, the image is visible. The same happens if I publish the post: the images are displayed correctly after publishing.

    So the images seem to be uploaded correctly, but they are not displayed while I am actively editing the post.

    Has anyone experienced this after updating to WordPress 7? Could this be related to a JavaScript, editor, caching, or plugin compatibility issue?

    Any ideas on what could be causing this would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi @juanwp22,

    If possible, please create a clone of your site, upgrade it to WordPress 7.1 RC3, and confirm whether the bug exists. Because WordPress 7.1 will be released in a few days.

    Does it happen with multiple posts, for example, a new test post? Which theme are you using?

    Hi @mbigul

    Sure, I can install WordPress 7.1 RC3 tomorrow and test it locally using XAMPP. Would that be sufficient for testing the issue?

    The issue happens with all posts I try to create or edit, not just a specific post. I’m using GeneratePress Premium, and I’m experiencing the same issue on two different sites (same theme).

    Hi @juanwp22,

    Try the following steps locally in your XAMPP environment and let us know.

    • Make a copy of the live site and set it up locally.
    • Update WordPress to the latest version (7.0.4, if you are currently using WordPress 7.0) and check if the issue still occurs.
    • If the issue remains, deactivate all plugins and test again.
    • If the problem persists, switch to a default theme and check whether the issue continues.
    • If the issue still exists, update the site to WordPress 7.1 RC3 using the Beta Tester plugin and check whether the problem is resolved.

    I already had WordPress 7.0.4 installed. I made a copy of the live site and set it up locally in XAMPP. Since the issue was still present, I didn’t deactivate the plugins or change the theme. I went directly to WordPress 7.1 RC3 to test whether the issue had been fixed.

    It seems to be working correctly with 7.1 RC3. I can upload images and see them while editing the post.

    Now I’ll just need to wait for the final 7.1 release and test it on my hosting environment to confirm that the issue is resolved there as well.

    Do we know exactly what was causing the images not to appear in the editor in 7.0? Is there any source, Trac ticket, or technical information where I can read more about this particular issue? Or is it considered a relatively uncommon bug?

    I see that WordPress 7.1 is currently scheduled for release on August 19, so I’ll test it on my live sites once the final version is available.

    Hi @juanwp22 ,

    Your test results are actually a useful clue. Since the same local copy shows the problem in 7.0.4 but works correctly after updating to 7.1 RC3, it looks much more like a WordPress core/editor issue in the 7.0.x branch rather than something specific to GeneratePress.

    WordPress 7.1 includes several changes and improvements around media handling in the editor, so your result is consistent with those changes.

    I don’t want to point you to a specific Trac ticket without confirming that it is the same issue. If you want to investigate it further, I’d suggest checking the 7.0 and 7.1 editor/media changes in Trac or the Gutenberg repository and comparing the related fixes.

    For now, your local test is a good way to confirm that the issue is resolved in 7.1 RC3. I’d wait for the final 7.1 release before updating the live sites, then test the same workflow there.

    Thanks for sharing the testing results they should also help narrow down whether this is a 7.0.x regression.

    Hi @rajaramesh @mbigul ,

    Today I updated to the stable version of WordPress 7.1. With the first post I edited, I was able to see the images while working on the post and everything seemed to be working correctly.

    However, after that, the issue came back and now it is happening again just like before. :s

    I tested it in both Chrome and Firefox, and the behavior is the same. I also cleared the browser cache, cookies, etc., but that didn’t make any difference.

    At this point, I’m not really sure what else I can try. The strange thing is that it worked correctly with the first post after the update, but then stopped working again.

    Any suggestions on what I should check next?

    I ran a few rounds of testing on my local copies and playground installation, but I could not reproduce this issue exactly with WordPress 7.0.4 and 7.1. So it is most likely a compatibility issue.

    Therefore, try the following steps to track the bug.

    • Make a copy of the live site and set it up locally.
    • Check if the issue still occurs.
    • If the issue remains, deactivate all plugins and test again.
      • If the problem persists, switch to a default theme and check whether the issue continues.
      • If the problem does not persist when all the plugins are inactive, activate the plugins as a group of 3-4 to make sure which plugin is causing the conflict

    Also, confirm whether the browser console shows any JavaScript errors when you encounter this bug.

    I’m still experiencing the same issue. I’ve been trying all kinds of things, but I haven’t been able to find a solution yet.

    My server is running OpenLiteSpeed, and I’m also using the LiteSpeed Cache plugin. What server setup and caching plugin are you using? I’d like to see if there’s any common factor between our setups.

    Also, does your website use any plugin for pinning images to Pinterest? That functionality isn’t working on my site either, and I suspect it may be related to the same issue with images not appearing correctly in the editor.

    If you’ve found anything that helped identify the plugin or JavaScript conflict, I’d really appreciate it if you could share it.

    I tested again in my local/test installations, but I could not reproduce the issue exactly. So most likely a compatibility issue.

    @mbigul Yes, I did some testing locally, but I couldn’t reproduce the issue there either :s

    I’ll try again over the next few days, this time disabling the plugins one by one to see if I can identify a possible compatibility issue.

    If anyone else manages to find anything or notices a similar problem, please let me know.

    @juanwp22 Then make a clone of the site in the same server environment as the production site and check whether the bug exists in a minimal setup (in the cloned site). Hope this helps track the problem.
