The issue you encountered was most likely caused by a temporary problem during the update process. It is possible that while the new plugin files were being copied, some of the old files were still being executed, or that the update process was interrupted unexpectedly, resulting in a corrupted plugin installation.
Since you have already removed the old plugin folder via FTP and installed the latest version manually, everything should be fine. Please make sure you have downloaded the latest TranslatePress version, try to install it, and check if the issue persists.
If you still encounter the same error after the fresh installation, please let us know, and we’ll be happy to investigate further.

the problem existed after several installations.
But I think I found the error: We had a translation incl. %s%% VAT to <abbr title="inclusive">inkl.</abbr> ...
After changing that to inkl. %s%% MwSt. the site seems to load fine
