Patterns changed to misleading SYNC symbol

    Hi Support

    I previously created some of my own patterns, using the WordPress Design/Patterns feature
    Some of my Patterns are SYNC’D & some are UNSYNC’D
    Before upgrading to WordPress 7.0, my SYNC’D patterns had a block symbol in the form of a double-diamond pattern icon & my UNSYNC’D patterns did NOT (had the original ordinary block icon based on the type of block)
    When added to a page, the SYNC’D patterns/blocks retained its (SYNC’D pattern) double-diamond pattern icon & UNSYNC’D patterns had the original ordinary block icon based on the type of block

    However …

    Before upgrading to WordPress 7.0, my UNSYNC’D patterns now have (SYNC’D pattern) double-diamond pattern icon when added/viewed in the page editor.

    • this is misleading/confusing, making you think they are SYNC’D
    • you have to detach the block to be able to edit it (UNSYNC’D), which should not be necessary

    (on the plus side) …

    • UNSYNC’D patterns still show as UNSYNC’D in Appearance, Design, Patterns, My Patterns (until you add the pattern to a page, as explained above)
    • UNSYNC’D patterns still show as UNSYNC’D in Edit Page, Block Chooser left-hand panel (until you add the pattern to a page, as explained above)
    • UNSYNC’D patterns already added to pages in the past still show as UNSYNC’D

    Can anything be done to quickly fix this?

    Hi @wpinthai ,

    I hope you’re doing well.

    If I understand it correctly, once you add a non-synced pattern to your content, it becomes a synced pattern, correct?

    If that’s the case, could you please run a complete conflict test and confirm if it happens with all plugins deactivated and a default theme?

    Many thanks for your reply.

    Not quite. Content has not actually become a synced pattern. It just looks like a synced pattern because the block now has the double-diamond pattern icon that (before the WordPress version update) used to appear only on blocks that were synced patterns.

    WordPress 7.0 added a “content-only” edit mode. This mode is now the default for unsynced patterns in the page editor. It changes two things:

    • The editor shows the double-diamond pattern icon on an unsynced pattern. You must click “Edit pattern” before you can change the blocks.
    • Your patterns are still unsynced. The new icon and the extra edit step do not make them synced. This is why they still show as unsynced in the Patterns screen, in the block chooser, and on older pages.

    For a quick fix, you can turn off this mode. Add this code to a small custom plugin, or to the functions.php file of a child theme:

    After you add the code, an unsynced pattern uses the old behavior again. Test the change on a staging site first.
