    Hi @rodeboy

Sorry to hear about the error you encountered.

Do you have any security or tracker/ad blocker extensions installed on your browser?

We had a few reports about AdGuard blocking JS files and showing that exact error (failed to load plugin url..).

If yes, could you try disabling that (or use another browser without any extensions) and see if the error in the editor disappears?

If you’re using caching plugins and/or server-side caching, please also clear all your caches to stop any possible caching issues.

    Here’s a helpful guide:  https://wordpress.org/documentation/article/faq-i-make-changes-and-nothing-happens/

We hope this helps. Let us know how it goes.

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly Jamie. You are right!! I have Avast SecureLine VPN with Ad Blocker extension on Google Chrome. After deactivating it the message does not appear. Obviously I want to have that activated, so the question is if something can be done about it. Can I just ignore the message and close the box each time, which I have to say will be a nuisance!

I guess that the Pop Up itself is unaffected and appears on the site in a fully functional state.

    Hi @rodeboy

    Thanks for the update.

Could you try enabling the “Try to bypass ad blockers” under Popup Maker > Settings > Misc and see if that helps?

Feel free to reach out if you have other questions

Unfortunately this did not resolve the issue. Any further suggestions, or plans to release an update to prevent this from happening?

    Hi @rodeboy

    Thanks for the update.

That error usually also comes up if that specific file is missing.

Please clear all your caches if you haven’t already. This includes your browser, caching plugin, WordPress, and server/CDN caches.

    Hi @rodeboy

Thanks for the update. We’re sorry to hear the issue is still happening.

Could you please also check for a plugin/theme conflict?

You can follow this guide: https://wppopupmaker.com/docs/problem-solving/test-whether-a-plugin-or-theme-interferes-with-popup-maker/

@rodeboy Jumping in here — the fix in this case is to whitelist your own site in Avast’s ad blocker rather than disabling the blocker entirely.

What’s happening is that the blocker is stopping Chrome from loading files out of our plugin folder, so the classic editor reports the mce-buttons.js failure. It’s happening entirely in your browser, before the request reaches your site, so there’s nothing we can change on our end to work around it — and it isn’t a caching or plugin conflict issue.

Whitelisting your own domain is safe here. You’re the only one working in the admin, and you won’t be serving ads or trackers to yourself.

On the “Try to bypass ad blockers” setting: that one only applies to the frontend popup scripts, which is why it didn’t help. Those workarounds are complex to build and maintain, and extending the same approach to the dozens of admin scripts that load conditionally isn’t feasible for us right now.

To answer your other two questions: yes, you can safely ignore the message if you’d rather not whitelist — the only real impact is that the Popup Maker button won’t load in the editor toolbar. And your visitors are unaffected. Popups display and function normally for anyone who isn’t running the same blocker.

@danieliser Thank you so much for your time and the detailed explanation. I have logged into Avast app, gone to settings and added the URL to exceptions, but am still getting the error. Is that the correct place to add the whitelist? Does it take a while to filter through?

    Thanks again, Chris
