🔴 Critical – Apple Pay & Google Pay Express Checkout incorrect totals + UK address mapping issue

    Hi Support,

We are experiencing a critical issue affecting Apple Pay and Google Pay Express Checkout using your Stripe WooCommerce plugin.

We have fully isolated the issue and confirmed it only affects Express Checkout. Standard WooCommerce checkout and PayPal are working correctly. 🔧 Environment

    • WordPress: 7.0
    • WooCommerce: (latest version)
    • PHP: 8.4.23
    • Payment Plugins for Stripe WooCommerce: latest version
    • Region: United Kingdom

🚨 Issue 1: UK county/state not being passed correctly:

Apple Pay and Google Pay are not reliably returning the UK administrativeArea (county/state).

    This results in WooCommerce triggering:

    “County/State is required”

This should not occur for UK addresses, as the state field is optional in WooCommerce for GB. Temporary workaround applied:

    We are forcing:

    • shipping_state = 'N/A'
    • billing_state = 'N/A' when empty

This prevents checkout failure but is not a permanent fix.

🚨 Issue 2: Incorrect Express Checkout total (critical):

Apple Pay and Google Pay correctly return shipping methods and display the correct shipping cost.

However, the final payment total sent to the Express Checkout sheet is incorrect. Example:

    • Subtotal: £5.40
    • Shipping: £4.50
    • Expected total: £9.90
    • Actual total shown in Apple Pay / Google Pay: £5.40

This indicates shipping is not being included in the final totalPrice calculation during the Express Checkout session update. 🧪 Steps to reproduce

    1. Add product to cart (£5.40 example)
    2. Proceed to checkout
    3. Click Apple Pay or Google Pay button
    4. Select UK shipping address
    5. Observe:
      • Shipping method displays correctly (£4.50)
      • Final total remains incorrect (£5.40 instead of £9.90)
    6. Attempt checkout → UK state validation error may also occur

    Isolation testing completed:

    • WooCommerce standard checkout → ✅ correct totals
    • PayPal Express Checkout → ✅ correct totals
    • Stripe card payments → ✅ correct
    • Apple Pay Express Checkout → ❌ incorrect totals + state error
    • Google Pay Express Checkout → ❌ incorrect totals + state error

    📌 Summary:

This appears to be an issue in the Express Checkout implementation layer of the Stripe plugin, specifically:

    • UK address administrativeArea mapping failure
    • Incomplete cart/total recalculation during Express Checkout session update
    • Shipping cost not being included in final totalPrice

    ⚠️ Impact:

This is preventing accurate checkout totals for Express Checkout users and causing checkout validation failures for UK customers.

We have implemented a temporary workaround for the state field, but require a permanent fix for:

    • UK address handling in Express Checkout
    • Correct total recalculation including shipping

Please let us know if you require logs, staging access, or further debug output.

    Many Thanks,
    Devan

    Hi @devancadman

Thank you for contacting Payment Plugins. I can see you’re using a checkout field editor plugin. When reviewing your checkout page, when UK is selected as the billing country, the county is shown as being required. That’s not a Stripe plugin issue, that’s your checkout field plugin’s conditional logic determining that field should be required.

Since the county field is optional in the UK, some customers will not have it filled out in their Apple Wallet. But since it’s required on your checkout page, that’s creating a conflict. You should update the configurations of your checkout field editor to ensure it’s not requiring optional address fields.

Actual total shown in Apple Pay / Google Pay: £5.40

The Stripe plugin uses the WooCommerce cart total for the total that’s communited to the payment sheet. Are you using any 3rd party plugin(s) for shipping?

    Kind Regards

Hey Thanks for that info. You were correct, “county” issue has been fixed.

    We are using:
Flexible Shipping PRO plugin – could this be the cause?

    Hi @devancadman

    Thank you for your reply.

You were correct, “county” issue has been fixed.

Now that is resolved I will have the checkout page tested again. I suspect the issue with your County field being required was interfering with the payment sheet’s total being updated.

    could this be the cause?

Yes, that is possible. Some shipping plugins don’t correctly include their total in the WooCommerce cart total if the request is not originating from the WooCommerce checkout page.

    Hi @devancadman

I am still seeing that State/Country is still required on your checkout page.

    Kind Regards

    Hey @mrclayton

The State/county is now not a required field.

Have you done testing with Flexible Shipping plugin to see if this is causing the shipping missing from the total in the express checkout?

    Thanks,
    Devan

    Hi @devancadman

Now that you have resolved the required field issue the shipping total is showing correctly in Apple Pay and Google Pay in my testing.

Can you confirm if you’re still seeing incorrect shipping totals?

On your checkout page, you have the express checkout section rendering after the shipping address fields. Since the benefit of the express checkout is the customer uses their shipping info from Apple Pay or Google Pay I would recommend moving it to the top of the page.

Or you can offer Apple Pay and Google Pay in the payment method section which won’t request their address info since the customer will have filled out the shipping fields manually.
