Setting up IP Detection Settings
-
Hi, I’m using the free version, latest as of 6/15/26, of AIO security. I’ve just installed it and most all is fine. I’m getting a warning message to: “The All in One Security plugin couldn’t be certain about the correct method to detect the IP address for your site visitors with your currently-configured IP address detection settings. It is important for your security to set the IP address detection settings properly.”
I’ve reviewed the IP Settings info in Advanced Settings tab, and see two options listed/highlighted in variables listing – REMOTE_ADDR (showing a current value which is my IP address), and HTTP_CLIENT_IP (current value: 127.0.0.1). The plugin is detecting my IP address; as its CloudFlare, ipify IPv4 & IPv6 values.
AIO is, for now, using REMOTE_ADDR, I guess as I have not “saved” or changed anything since reviewing this tab. Aside from choosing one of the two options, and saving, I see no other settings to make. As the warning message states the app is not certain about the method for detection, and there’s only two options, not sure what it’s asking for. I would think this is a simple explanation, but I don’t want to make the wrong choice. Is it just asking that I “save” the REMOTE_ option – this is the first time setting up this app and nothing has been “saved” in this tab – so it can do what it does, or is the REMOTE_ option use the one giving out the warning, and the HTTP would be better?
I am not a developer, just the site administrator (developer unavailable) – so please, any help given should not be too technical. I can follow clear instructions (if needed, and if you say add any code to a file/folder please state where in the file to add it, beginning/end, and write exactly as it should be entered symbols and all – I can find the files/folders in htdocs but don’t want to mess it up). To further show my lack of knowing; the IP address/value it shows is for my work computer, not the website’s IP, is that correct or should it be the site’s IP? I tried running a scan and it ran forever, 50 minutes, before I canceled it and I wondered if the plugin was not connecting to/aware of the site’s actual server because of a IP value mismatch?
Thank you,
Tom
