WP STAGING 4.8.1 is now available.

This release focuses on faster restores, lower runtime impact, better reliability on restrictive hosting environments, and a smoother admin experience.

The biggest improvement is restore performance. Database restores are now dramatically faster on large backups, especially on multi-gigabyte sites. Restores that previously took a long time should now complete in a fraction of the previous time.

We also made WP STAGING much less visible to frontend visitors while backup, staging, and restore operations are running. The plugin now avoids unnecessary frontend impact, so active staging operations should no longer slow down visitors on your live site.

Inside wp-admin, WP STAGING also feels snappier. Admin scripts have been moved out of the critical render path and now use event delegation where possible, reducing unnecessary page-load overhead.

    What is new in 4.8.1:

    • Much faster database restores for large backups
    • No noticeable frontend performance impact during active WP STAGING operations
    • Faster and cleaner wp-admin behavior
    • New “WP Staging: Tips & Guides” dashboard widget with useful documentation and tutorial links
    • Independent Remote Sync API versioning for better compatibility between sites running different plugin versions
    • Backup file format upgraded to version 2.1.0, preparing the foundation for upcoming features like per-file encryption and split backups
    • Existing backups remain fully restorable, no migration required

    Reliability improvements:

    • Restore jobs now retry temporary server errors automatically
    • Restore processes now respect server retry-after timing
    • Backup queues can self-heal when loopback requests are blocked or silently dropped by Cloudflare, restrictive firewalls, or cURL-blocked hosts
    • Background backup and restore failures now show clearer, more actionable error messages
    • Live backup logs now stream more reliably and no longer freeze around 100 events
    • Repeated but valid log lines are no longer incorrectly hidden
    • Remote Sync pulls are now cleaned up properly if the initiating site becomes unresponsive
    • Failed Remote Sync authentication attempts are now throttled in Pro
    • Backup upload security checks have been strengthened

    UI and UX polish:

    • Improved staging-site delete confirmation modal
    • Fixed dark-mode styling in several areas
    • Restored missing “Set Default” links in Advanced Settings
    • Improved layout handling for long system information values
    • Fixed spacing and styling issues in warnings, selectors, buttons, and modals

    Developer and release pipeline improvements:

    • Added separate CI workflow for Remote Sync tests
    • Improved release pre-flight checks
    • Fixed release pipeline behavior for release branches
    • Improved test reliability by moving network-dependent tests into the integration suite
    • Fixed FTPS test compatibility on Apple Silicon
    • Improved changelog publishing on wp-staging.com

This is a performance, reliability, and compatibility release, and we recommend updating to WP STAGING 4.8.1 when convenient.

As always, thank you for using WP STAGING and for sending feedback, bug reports, and edge cases from real hosting environments. They help us make the plugin more stable with every release.
