My site has the latest wp version
    = 6.9.4 en_GB
    The following problem
appears on desktop and on mobile
    = no difference .

    1
I create a new navigation menu block
    by starting with /n
    anywhere within a page
    in edit mode.

    2
I add one or several sub menu items
    to a specific menu item.
    With creating submenu items
the options of the menu block show:
display: submenu visibility yes, show arrows yes

    3
    Saving the modified menu indicates
that this menu (with name) will be saved.

    4
    After leaving the edit mode
and returning to normal display mode
    the navigation menu appears
    with it’s new submenu items.

    5
But when I return into edit mode
    the submenu items are lost.
    Returning into display mode
they are still in the right place.
But going back into edit mode
    the submenu items disappear again.

    6
    And sometimes appear
in edit mode orange-red dots –
    one or two –
    next to the navigation block
or in the top of the page.
I suppose they indicate an error
    but do not exactly know
    what they mean.

    Any help?
    Thanks a lot 🙂 chris

  • This sounds like the menu is saved, but the editor isn’t loading the nested items back correctly.

Since the submenu still appears on the frontend, I’d first check whether this is only a Navigation block/editor issue rather than the menu data being lost.

A quick test would be creating the same menu from Appearance → Editor / Navigation, then inserting that saved menu into the page instead of building it inline.

If that behaves differently, it tells you the issue is with the block instance, not the menu itself. I can suggest the next check if that helps.

    Thank you for helping 🙂

Yes, the editor does not remember,
what it created just a minute ago.

The frontend adopts the new subitems,
    but the editor not.

    Sometimes it works –
    but I can’t figure out
    under which conditions.
    When the orange dots appear,
    then it does not work.

Under Appearance I can’t find Editor,
    just Theme file editor …

    cu 🙂 chris

That’s all i can think of at the moment, if you want i can maybe help you debug this further.
