WP Gallery troubles

I have been trying to get WP Gallery working for a week now (30 minutes at a time)
I have no idea what I am doing wrong..I have attempted a test post, and I get a little square box with “img” inside of it–where my pic should be..
Anyone care to steer me in the right direction?
If you do try and help, please bear in mind I have very little (read as zero) knowledge of PHP/HTML/etc…….
I do appreciate any assistance you can offer..
