I have tried using the WordPress Export Tool to download blog posts.

The last time it worked correctly was on 12/1/2025.

Each time I have attempted to use it from 12/1 on, the XML file created is significantly smaller than previous file sizes, even though more posts have been made.

I use a program called WordPress2 Doc that converts the XML file to Microsoft Word. I have never had any issues with the program, but now an error is generated each time I try to convert the XML file to Word.

I am trying to recover 26 blog posts for December 2025 thru February 2026. If this can be accomplished, then I can have a 12/1/2025 backup restored and then re-add the 26 posts for December thru February.

What could possibly be causing the Export Tool to not work correctly?

  • Hi @mickey65!

Could you import the exported file into a new, empty WordPress site to see what might be missing and whether any pattern emerges? Also on the XML to Word converter, what error do you see?

Please narrow down the problem to something specific. For example, if you can identify a single post that gets skipped/breaks from the export file and the same post content reliably causes the export problem in a fresh site, that’s much easier to work with.

See https://core.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/64347. That might be the problem. If so, wait for 6.9.1 in January.

After doing some research, I found several sites that said that WordPress version 6.9 had multiple issues.

The Export tool would not work correctly on any of my blogs.

My hosting company did a rollback on all of my blogs to version 6.8.3

After this was completed, the Export tool began to work correctly.

    So version 6.9 has problems

It has already been mentioned several times above that the bug in the export tool is known and documented here, and will be fixed in the next update: https://core.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/64347 – if this is essential for you, you can of course downgrade or just wait for 6.9.1.

Otherwise, version 6.9 has been running pretty smoothly for me so far. I can’t see any general problems (the export tool also works for me, as I don’t seem to have the underlying character set problem in any of my projects). What is already known and will be fixed in 6.9.1 in January is documented here: https://core.trac.wordpress.org/query?group=status&milestone=6.9.1
