Hello, I’m managing a membership-based website where some posts/pages are restricted under specific conditions (viewable only to logged-in WP users). The site is free for members (no fees or transactions).

I was hoping to use MailPoet to send automated email notifications to members when a new restricted post is published.

After setting everything up and testing, I now see via the FAQ that restricted content is not compatible with the “Automatic Latest Content” module.

What is the purpose of this restriction? Is there any way to disable this limitation?

    Thanks for your help,

    – Andrew

    Hello there @anewbydesign ,

Thank you so much for reaching out and for sharing how you’re using MailPoet with your membership-based site. I completely understand why you’d want to notify your members automatically when new restricted posts are published, and I appreciate you taking the time to test this setup.

You’re right, MailPoet’s “Automatic Latest Content” feature only includes publicly available posts in its notifications. This restriction exists because MailPoet pulls published posts directly from your WordPress site’s public feed (RSS). Restricted or private content doesn’t appear there, since WordPress hides it for users who aren’t logged in. This design helps prevent any protected content from being unintentionally exposed via email.

That said, there are a couple of alternative approaches you can try:

    1. Manual Newsletters:
You can create and send a newsletter manually when you publish a restricted post. This allows you to include custom excerpts, links, or password-protected URLs for your members.
    2. If you have a developer helping you, they can use WordPress hooks to trigger a MailPoet email when a private post is published, giving you full control over what’s included.

Please note that assistance with a custom action like that is outside our scope of support, but if you need help with custom code, we recommend reaching out to someone from Codeable (affiliate link).

    I hope this is helpful.

Thanks for your thoughtful response @geraltrivia

For now, I’ll manually send the email newsletters. I will look into WordPress hooks when I have some time.

If MailPoet were to add a feature to include restricted posts in automated email notifications, this would be a huge value-add for several of my clients who manage membership websites.

I can totally understand why we may want to prevent protected content from being unintentionally exposed via email. Perhaps a “human in the loop” intervention would be a good solution… an admin could receive a notification before the email gets sent to the full email list. Something like:

“MailPoet’s ‘Automatic Latest Content’ feature has detected new post(s) containing protected content. Please log in to confirm the email should be sent to [List Name]”

    Thanks again!

    Hello again @anewbydesign ,

Thank you so much for your thoughtful reply and for sharing how you’re using MailPoet with your membership-based site. I really appreciate the insight you provided about how this feature could benefit membership websites. Your “human in the loop” idea makes a lot of sense.

At the moment, this functionality isn’t on our roadmap, but you’re very welcome to add it as a feature suggestion here: MailPoet Feedback Portal

Our team regularly reviews suggestions there when discussing new features and improvements for the plugin, so your feedback would be a valuable addition.

Thank you again for taking the time to share your perspective and for being so thoughtful in your feedback.
