Hi Team,

I am facing an issue on my sites — actually, not only on this site but also on several others. I have enabled Google Pay and Apple Pay in my Stripe account as well as on my websites, but they are not showing on the cart and checkout pages. After discussing this with Stripe support, they suggested that I reach out to your team for further assistance. For reference, they provided the following case number: sco_T8s2psi5B8EdRB. Could you please check this and help me resolve the issue?

Hi,

Thank you for your response and for reviewing our website.

We understand your point about Express Checkout compatibility with virtual or non-shippable products. However, we already have other websites selling the exact same type of digital products (courses) — and Apple Pay and Google Pay are working perfectly on those sites.

For your reference, here are three examples where Express Checkout is functioning correctly:
All of these sites sell similar digital courses and use identical WooCommerce and Stripe configurations. Therefore, we’re trying to understand why this issue is only occurring on specific sites while the others work perfectly fine.

Could you please recheck if there might be any site-specific configuration or backend condition that could be preventing the Express Checkout buttons from appearing?

Thanks for the detailed follow-up and the comparison sites. That’s super helpful.

Quick check first: did you already go through the “Show Express Checkout buttons for virtual products” guide I shared and adjust your setup accordingly?
Here’s the key bit from the Stripe for WooCommerce docs (paraphrased):
- By default, Payment Request buttons (Apple Pay / Google Pay / Link) are hidden when a product is not shippable and taxes are calculated from the billing address — to avoid tax mismatches before an address is known.
- Since v9.5.0 you can override that behavior with a filter.
If your store sells virtual/downloadable courses and you want the buttons visible, please try adding this snippet:

add_filter( 'wc_stripe_should_hide_express_checkout_button_based_on_tax_setup', '__return_false' );
```
Where to add it:
- Tools → Code Snippets → Add New (preferred), or
- functions.php of your (child) theme.
After adding it:
1. Clear any caching (you’re on WP Engine; purge caches + any page optimizer),
2. Hard-refresh, and
3. Test on a supported device/browser (e.g., Safari on iOS for Apple Pay; Chrome/Edge with a saved card and Google Pay profile for GPay).
If the buttons still don’t appear, please run these site-specific checks (since your other sites work):
- Apple Pay domain: In Stripe Dashboard → Apple Pay, confirm cambridgeopenacademy.com is registered and the association file is reachable at: https://cambridgeopenacademy.com/.well-known/apple-developer-merchantid-domain-association
- Plugin/theme stack: You have many outdated Woo templates in WPLMS. Create a quick test with Storefront + only WooCommerce + WooCommerce Stripe Gateway active and the default [woocommerce_checkout] page. If buttons show there, the theme/templates are the blocker.
- Environment:
 - Update WordPress (6.8.3) and WooCommerce (10.2.2).
 - Move off PHP 7.4 (end-of-life). Stripe and modern browser APIs behave best on PHP 8.1+.
 - Ensure WP Cron is enabled (your SSR shows “–”); some Stripe assets enqueue on footer hooks that can be impacted by aggressive optimization/fragment settings.
- Stripe settings:
 - WooCommerce → Payments → Stripe → Express Checkout: confirm it’s enabled for product, cart, and checkout.
 - Make sure Test Mode is what you intend (your SSR block looks inconsistent there).
- Frontend blockers:
 - Temporarily disable “Disable Cart Fragments”, side-cart, and any JS minification/deferral. These can prevent Stripe’s payment-request script from initializing.
 - Verify the checkout template outputs wp_footer() (required for Stripe assets).
If you’ve already tried the virtual-product guide and add the filter above but still don’t see the buttons, tell me:
- whether the Apple Pay association file loads (yes/no), and
- whether the buttons appear on the Storefront+Stripe-only test page.
We’ll zero in from there.

Great — it’s already working and appearing on the cart and checkout pages across all my websites. Now, I have another question: is it possible to make Google Pay and Apple Pay appear as options alongside PayPal and Stripe during checkout? Currently, Express Checkout buttons only appear at the top of the checkout page, not as selectable payment options like PayPal or Stripe. Is there a way to achieve that?

Great to hear you’ve got Apple Pay and Google Pay showing now! On your follow-up: those wallets in the Stripe plugin are Express Checkout “Payment Request Buttons”, not standard gateways. By design they sit outside the radio-list of payment methods and run a different, browser-wallet flow, so you can’t make them appear as selectable options alongside “PayPal” or “Stripe Card” in the list.

What you can do:
- Keep them on product/cart/checkout (you can choose the locations and styling in WooCommerce → Payments → Stripe → Express Checkout), click on Customize beside the Apple Pay / Google Pay.
- If you want them lower on the checkout page, a developer can reposition the PRB container with a small snippet that unhooks it from its default location and re-hooks it near the payment section. They’ll still be separate buttons (not radio options), but visually closer to the other methods.
