I’ve been a keen Newsletter plugin user for many years – and have been very happy with it.

*However* it only came to my attention a month or two ago that Gmail subscribers were not receiving the send-outs. There was just no way of knowing. So … I ended up trying to use an external SMTP gateway (Mailersend) – but that was simply too difficult to get working properly: all sorts of limit restrictions etc. and instructions that barely made sense.

In the end, I had to persuade my clients to use (and pay for) Mailchimp – which sends to Gmail with no problems.

As far as I can make out (and I’m no expert), the Gmail servers require some additional headers – which the Newsletter plugin does not add.

My question is: Will these headers ever be implemented? If not, then I’m afraid I’m going to have to call it a day with this plugin – after many years of loyal support.

Gmail accounts for a large proportion of email these days, so I’d have thought native compatibility would be quite a high priority.

    Any chance?

    Hello @adamnz,

first of all thanks for being such a long time user. We do really appreciate that.

About your issue: first thing we need to understand here is that, unlike Mailchimp, Newsletter relies on your own server (or the one you specify through an Smtp addon or one of our dedicated integrations) to send out newsletters. If you use an external server, it is usually properly configured to comply with Gmail requests, but also in that case you’d need to check some configurations on your own domain. If you use your own server it may need further set up in order to be able to send newsletters succesfully and even in that case you might encounter some other problems, like blacklisted servers, sending limits and so on. So generally speaking, a good initial check up is always required.

That’s why in Newsletter we added a Help panel where you can check some indicatons whether your server will be able to send out emails reliably or not. In particular, the Help > Sending panel contains a Test email tool which you can use to test delivery (on Gmail accounts as well). So first of all, to help you on this topic I’d need you to try and perform a test send towards a Gmail address there. Then please report back to me and we’ll take it from there.

    Thanks,

    Michael
