• First, I didn’t create the website. It was done for me. However, the person who did it no longer is available for me to try to get updated. It’s been super glitchy the last year or so, and I’m sure it’s because I can’t update it. Jetpack tells me several times a day that it is unresponsive, then it’s back on. If I try to update, it tells me it can’t because my PHP is too old a version, but when I click on the link about PHP it tells me there is nothing for me to do. I don’t make any money on this website any longer, partially because of the glitchy, so I can’t really hire someone to redo my website…anyway I can do basic stuff. Just wondering what I can do to make it less glitchy, maybe update it. Maybe I need to find someone to migrate it to a more update version, I don’t know. Anyway, any help would be appreciated.

  • Sounds like your site is glitchy mainly because it’s running on an old PHP version that your hosting controls, not you. The first step is to log into your hosting panel (like cPanel or Plesk) and look for a PHP Version option — if you can, upgrade it to PHP 8.1+; if not, just contact your host’s support and ask them to update PHP for your site. Once that’s done, you should be able to safely update WordPress, plugins, and your theme (always back up first with a tool like UpdraftPlus). This usually fixes Jetpack’s “site unresponsive” warnings, since they’re often caused by old PHP or slow servers. And if your host won’t help, consider moving to a modern host that offers free migration — you can keep your site design but run it on up-to-date software, which will make things much less glitchy without having to hire someone for a full rebuild.

You currently appear to be using WordPress version 6.2.7. In addition to updating WordPress, you will also need to update the plugins you are using. We recommend the following procedure:

    1. Create a backup of your project. You can do this either through your host (apparently this is Singlehop, so contact their support if necessary) or with one of the free backup plugins: https://wordpress.org/plugins/tags/backup/

    2. Then update WordPress first, followed by the plugins.

    3. Next, check whether there are any updates for your theme and install these as well.

    4. Finally, check your website to make sure everything is still as it should be.

Anyone can do this themselves. It’s not rocket science and you don’t need to know how to program. If you still need help, you can find it here: https://jobs.wordpress.net

    Regarding the PHP version:
This is provided by your host. WordPress cannot influence this. I would recommend contacting your host’s support team for assistance with this issue. Another recommendation would be to update to PHP 8.3 at most – but only after you have installed the above updates.
