• The Appearance Menu on my WordPress dashboard has lost all menu items except for Themes and Editor. I am unable to do Custom CSS or work with my Menu. How do I get the default WordPress options back?

  • Hey @speedneeds,

The Appearance menu items are determined by the theme currently in use. Block themes, eg, Twenty Twenty-* themes, only come with two options. The themes and editor options.

While classic themes, eg, Astra, rely on different options to make adjustments to the site. Some options are themes, customize, widgets, menus, etc.

All the things you mentioned above like adding custom CSS and making edits to the menu, are still possible with block themes’ full site editor.

It sounds like you are using a block theme. So the question would be what theme are you currently using?

    Regards,

I am currently using Twenty Twenty Five. That is the theme I have been using from the beginning and I think that those options use to be there. I know I have used them in the past.

The Twenty Twenty-Five theme is a block-based full site editing theme. The menus you are talking about have not been there for FSE themes (Twenty Twenty-Two and later), and now editing of every part of the site is possible through the Site Editor. By default, this theme comes with those two options.

Since you’ve mentioned having them before, this can be due to a plugin that brought back the old functionality. If you want to get the menu items back, you can consider switching to a classic theme (Astra, Twenty Twenty-One, Generate Press, etc.) or using a plugin.

To get additional CSS, go to Editor > Styles > Additional CSS, and to get the menu, go to Editor > Navigation.

If you want to stick to your current theme, you can learn how to best use it to unlock its full potential. The resource below should help:

There are plugins such as https://wordpress.org/plugins/classic-menus-for-block-themes/ that restore the menu entries you are missing in the backend for a block theme. Perhaps you had one of these in use and have now deactivated it.
