Can’t upload files to FTP
-
I am about to migrate from Backwpup to UpdraftPlus. I’ve just finished the first installation. While I can connect to FTP, Updraft can’t upload any files for no apparent reason. The folder is set to 755, but even 777 didn’t work.
What am I missing?
Thank you!

By the way, I use a relative path to the upload folder. Removing the upload path does the trick, and the upload works. But this is, of course, not what I want.
The remote path reads like this:
/201813575/domain.com

Any news on this? I don’t want to sound rude or impatient. But I got an answer to a much less important question very quickly in this forum. So, you really care about the users. Thank you! This is, on the other hand, a pretty urgent issue, since I can’t continue my tests.
Thanks a lot!
Hi there,
Apologies, it looks like this support request was overlooked for a while.
It is quite tricky to identify specific FTP issues due to forum limitations.
It could be UpdraftPlus has difficulties with the path structure in use.
Can you successfully upload to the remote path using an FTP client?
When you use the plugin Test FTP settings option is there a message?
I’m looking for clues as to what could be causing the difficulties here.
Best regards,
NickHi Nick,
thank you very much. I can connect to the server using an FTP client without any issue. Actually, I used this FTP connections for years in BackWPup (which I want to remove and use UpdraftPlus instead). The error message reads:
“FTP settings test result: Failure: we successfully logged in, but were not able to create a file in the given directory.”
Removing the remote path fixes the problem, but I would prefer to have a folder for each site. I tried it with a new folder and with/without “/”. It simply won’t work, if the remote path is not empty. The problem is clearly the folder, not the FTP connection itself.
Thanks, Mike
Hi Mike,
Thanks for the update.
The difficulty we have here is we can’t ask for credentials to test or communicate outside the forum.
Which means I have to speculate a little on what the problem could be rather than identify it for you.
I’m assuming the folder you’re attempting to connect to already exists. Sorry if it’s an obvious thing.
I’m going to check with colleagues in case they’re familiar with the specific issue and I’m simply not.
Best regards,
NickHi Nick,
yes, the folder exists. 🙂 Shall I contact you via your homepage?
Best regards, Mike
Hi Mike,
Another WordPress rule is we can’t provide support for the free plugin via our paid service.
I have asked a colleague for their view but being Saturday it may be a while before a reply.
You mention removing relative path works, I assume the backup goes to the wrong folder?
Apologies for the obvious question, it’s just very hard with no means of testing this myself.
Best regards,
NickHi,
According to WordPress forum guide lines, all support for the free plugin has to be in this forum (we are not allowed to accept any submissions via our helpdesk)
In your message you say your file path is
/201813575/domain.com
Which means you have on your FTP, you already have a folder called “201813575” with as subfolder called “domain.com”?
The issue seems to be with the folder and or the remote path on your folder.
On your FTP, can you you create a folder called updraftplus and put this as your remote path, you can remove it afterwards, this is just a test.
Can you then try sending your backup to it ?(it doesn’t need to be a full backup, just something like your plugins so we can check that the backup is going to the correct place)
Hi,
I created the folder and set it to 755. No luck:
0006.257 (0) FTP upload: error (0)
0006.257 (0) FTP: ERROR: FTP upload failedTesting the FTP settings fails, too:
“FTP settings test result: Failure: we successfully logged in, but were not able to create a file in the given directory.”
I tried “updraftplus”, “/updraftplus” and “/updraftplus/”.
For test purposes, I created a new FTP user on one of my customer sites for a newly created folder. This works!
Now, on the actual backup server connects one FTP user to several sub-folders. So, the user set is set for “top-level-folder”, and this folder contains sub-folders for the individual backups. This seems not to work. I created for test purposes a new FTP user with no sub-folder. This totally works.
The problem is, however, that I can create so many FTP users on this server.
I’m not quite sure what the problem is. I used BackWPup for years in this configuration.
Thanks, Mike
Can you check how much space the FTP user that you are having issue with has left?
Who provides your FTP? It might be worth contacting them as well to see if they see any issues from their end?
Sorry for my mistake in the post above. I meant that I can NOT create so many FTP users. 🙂 Space is not limited per user. As I said in one of my previous posts: I can upload backups with no issues at all with the remote path left empty. The problem is somehow caused by the remote path.
For test purposes I’ve just used a FTP user on the same server (where UpdraftPlus is installed) and created a folder that I used in the upload path. This works, but is not a solution, sinced I prefer to use a remote backup.
I provde the FTP data and have never had any issues at all. I use FTP/SFTP all the time on a daily basis in all sorts of applications.
Hi,
Can you post your backup log from the the backup log where you have not entered the remote path? Can you post this using a tool such as pastebin.com. You can do a search and replace of your site name if you need to.
Can I also check that the FTP file you are backing up to is not the same server that your site is on?
Hi,
here’s the log of the sucsessful backup job.
Can I also check that the FTP file you are backing up to is not the same server that your site is on?
The backup server is 100% not the same server where the site is on. It’s not even the same company.
When you were trying updraftplus was updraftplus a subfolder of say 201813575
i.e 201813575/updaftplus or was updraftplus the entire remote path?
No, updraftplus was created in the root. So, “updraftplus” was the entire remote path.
I wonder whether I am the only one having these nasty problems? My FTP connections are standard configurations that have worked for years without any problems. This is the first time ever that I have issues. Don’t get me wrong, but setting up the FTP connection shouldn’t take hours of troubleshooting.
A far as I can see problems occur only if subfolders are used. This is strange, since the permissions should always work recursively.
I’ve just tested it with the WPvivid Backup plugin with not problems at all.
