I am having to set up a new shop after WP commerce crashed my site.

We have an existing PayPal account but can not get this plugin to connect.

I spent an hour last night but kept going round in circles.

At one point it wanted me to create a new account, when I finally got past that it went to link to existing account.

Put in all the details – email and password, then got a text with the authentication numbers to enter, this went back to start all over again email, password.

Just going round in circles for as I said an hour – driving me mad.

    Please help, thanks.

    Hello @johndt,

Thanks for reaching out, and I completely understand how frustrating this must have been.

Based on your description, it sounds like the issue may be due to mixing sandbox and live account credentials during the connection process. If the plugin is set to sandbox mode, but you’re entering your live PayPal credentials (or vice versa), the connection flow will not complete successfully and may keep looping back to the login screen.

    Here’s what I recommend:

    1. Double-check your plugin settings:
      • Go to WooCommerce → Settings → Payments → PayPal
      • Make sure sandbox mode is disabled if you’re connecting a live PayPal account
      • Or enable sandbox mode if you’re testing with sandbox credentials.
    2. Start the connection process again using the correct environment (sandbox or live).
    3. Try using an incognito/private browser window to avoid session issues.

If the issue continues, we’re here to help further and can assist you in getting everything set up correctly.

Thank you for getting back. PayPal is in live mode.

Can not try to set up today as I do not have the login for PayPal, the person that manages it is out for the day. Will have to try tomorrow.

Sorry to say but I tried all the suggestions but I am still being asked to create a business account.

    Hello @johndt,

    Thank you for reaching out.

We understand this might be a bit confusing, but please note that a Personal PayPal account has limited functionality, especially when integrating with e-commerce platforms like WooCommerce.

Based on your country and currency, PayPal may recommend upgrading to a Business account if more advanced features are available for that region. These features can include: Accepting advanced credit/debit card payments, Offering Pay Later options (e.g., Pay in 4), Enabling recurring payments or subscriptions

For further details or assistance with upgrading, we recommend contacting PayPal Support directly.

Please feel free to reach out if you have any other questions—we’re happy to help!

    THanks for the reply.

We used PayPal on the WP ecommerce site that broke.

We have had a business PayPal account for 12 years.

    My sincere apologies,

I asked the person that runs our PayPal account if they would let me in to the account.

On checking we did NOT have a business account.

I upgraded and now all is working as expected.

    Once again sorry.

    • PayPal showing 3 easy payments:
To hide this, please go to PayPal Settings → Checkout Page → Hide Funding Method(s) and select “Pay Later” from the list.
    • To remove PayPal from the cart page:
Navigate to PayPal Settings → Cart Page, and simply check the option to Disable PayPal on the cart.
    • For pill-shaped buttons:
Go to PayPal Settings → Checkout Page → Button Shape and choose “Pill” from the options.

👉 Please Don’t forget to click the “Save changes” button after updating the settings to make sure everything is applied correctly.

    Check settings
To hide this, please go to PayPal Settings → Checkout Page → Hide Funding Method(s) and select “Pay Later” from the list
    .

Can not see this option – PayPal Settings Checkout Page → Hide Funding Method(s) and select “Pay Later” from the list.

I have done this – PayPal Settings → Cart Page, and simply check the option to Disable PayPal on the cart.- still shows.
I have changed button shape to pill.

    This is what still happens.

Opened the shop on different laptop.
Click on product to view it and oblong PayPal button showing. Do not want this.
At the top of this page – Invalid PayPal client ID. Please check your API Settings.

Add to basket – oblong PayPal button showing. Do not want this.

On the basket page – Paypal button showing, it is the correct shape but I do not want it on this page. (in settings have selected checkout page)
Also showing pay in 3 interest free. Do not want this.

    Checkout page –
    PayPal button wrong shape

    What next please?

    Hello @johndt ,

I had a quick look at your website (e.g., https://shop.eastbournefhs.org.uk/product/alfriston-parish-registers/) and noticed that you’re currently using this PayPal plugin: https://wordpress.org/plugins/pymntpl-paypal-woocommerce/.

Just to clarify, that plugin isn’t developed by us. Our plugin is this one: https://wordpress.org/plugins/woo-paypal-gateway/

Let us know if you need any help or have any questions—we’d be happy to assist!

How embarrising, I am so sorry I thought they were both yours.

I deleted all paypal plugins and reinstalled yours, taken a while as PayPal wanted drivers licence and it took a while to upload it in a readable resolutiom.

    All good now thank you.
