• I am new to WordPress and using Dreamhost. My site is http://www.billdawers.com. I use Macs, but have access to a PC.

I have tried using a variety of methods, including webftp and quick install, to install a new theme, but I get a variety of error messages, such as: “Unable to create directory /home/dawers/billdawers.com/wp-content/themes/2011/01. Is its parent directory writable by the server?” Using net2ftp on the from the Dreamhost panel, the upload to the themes folder results in: Could not create directory /billdawers.com/wp-content/themes/platform/ If I use regular ftp and just try to drag and drop, I get a message saying that files cannot be moved because the folder cannot be modified.

It seems that my folders are all “read only” and I’ve looked through various posts now for a while to try to solve this problem.

Thanks in advance for any help anyone can give.

  • Change the permissions on the wp-content directory to 766. If you still have problems, try 767 or 777. Once your uploads are working, change the permissions on wp-content back to 755 again and check that everything still works OK.

    Thanks so much Esmi.

So I tried changing the permissions — currently set at 755 — using net2ftp (Dreamhost’s web-based ftp), but got an error message that the change could only be done with a UNIX server, not a Windows one. (Exact message: “Note that the CHMOD command is only available on Unix FTP servers, not on Windows FTP servers.”)

I guess I’m sort of lost about where to click to open or select the wp-content directory so that I can change it.

Is this a local or remote install?
