Slow Site Connection

I’m having some slow site connection issues and I just want to cover my bases and make sure it has nothing to do with my coding. My site is located at:

http://www.workingauthor.com/

Could you visit it and tell me how long it takes to connect to it before it the page starts to load? I’m personally experiencing a delay of about 10 seconds. Some visitors have told me 30 seconds.

I can understand if my code slows down the load time, but why would it slow down the actual connection to my site? I’m still teaching myself Web development so any advice is appreciated.

If the problem is my host I’d also appreciate suggestions for a new one.
