Yoast SEO does not pick up on my internal links :(
-
Hi,
I’m using the free plugin Yoast SEO. On my homepage I keep getting the ‘There are no internal links, add some’ announcement on my homepage. But it’s not true! I have internal links (the Spa Manicure, Gel Polish BIAB Treatment piece)!
Could it be an issue with the salient theme? Does Yoast SEO only pick up on textblock links? Because the links that I do have, are not in textblocks but different kind of blocks.
Secondly, my blog (news) is in Dutch. The main pages however are in English.
- Could this hurt the site in any way?
- Could it maybe be that this is the reason why Yoast can’t pick up my internal link structure?
Please have a look at the page and help me out!
Thanks, Huub

Hi @huubv
Can you kindly check if any of the following troubleshooting step fixes the issue?
- Do you have absolute URLs for the internal links?
All links must be added to the content using an absolute format. For example, siteurl/page-a is an absolute link, while /page-a/ is a relative link. - Can you kindly check the WordPress site address and protocol format when checking for internal links? The wrong format (http vs. https or www vs. non-www) could cause this. Please verify that your internal links all start with the site address found at WordPress dashboard > Settings > General > Site Address (URL).
- Yoast SEO analyses the default content area, so links from navigational bars, menus, sidebars, or footers are not recognized. We highly recommend adding links inside your content to improve your site’s link-building strategy.
- If none of the above solves the issue, please go to WordPress dashboard > Yoast SEO > Tools. Please click the ‘Start SEO data optimization’ button if you don’t see a green success notification.
If you have made changes to your site through imported content or server access, you’ll want to reset the optimization so the plugin can recognize the differences. Please install and activate the Yoast Test Helper plugin, then go to the WordPress dashboard > Tools > Yoast Test > Yoast SEO and click the ‘Reset Internal link counter’ button.
We recommend creating regular backups of your site and database for your site’s health and safety. A backup is crucial before installing, updating, or removing plugins and provides you with a safety net if something were to go wrong.

Hi Mushrit,
Thanks, I will check these things tonight. But if gets weirder. I also receive these announcements from Yoast on mij homepage:
- Subkoptekst verdeling: 1 sectie van je tekst is langer dan 300 woorden, en wordt niet verdeeld door subkopteksten. Voeg subkopteksten toe om de leesbaarheid te verbeteren.
- Alinealengte: 4 van de alinea’s bevatten meer dan het aanbevolen aantal van 150 woorden. Maak je alinea’s korter!
Translation: - Subheading distribution: One section of your text is longer than 300 words and is not divided by subheadings. Add subheadings to improve readability.
- Paragraph length: 4 of your paragraphs contain more than the recommended 150 words. Make your paragraphs shorter!
First of all I don’t even have a section of 300 words ont his page. Secondly it says 4 of my paragraphs contain more the the recommended 150 words. There are by far no 600 words on the page!
Maybe this helps locating the problem better.
Hi @huubv
Are you adding the content through any page builder?
If yes, you can create a draft post without using the page builder and copy the content section from the frontend of your site into the default editor. The Yoast analysis will run on the draft’s copy of the content so you can review and change the content in both editors. Once you’ve optimized the content, you can discard the draft copy and add the content within your page builder.
Hi Mushrit,
Thanks again for the response. As for the internal links: I have changed some columns for textblocks, now yoast is picking up the internal links. I think Yoast doesn’t pick up a (or some) columns that are totally linked. For instance the ‘Spa Manicure, Gel Polish Manicure, BIAB behandeling’ part on the homepage.
My second question, about the paragraph length and subheading distribution(see my second post above) is still dazzling me. I have no idea how to fix it! I have worked with Yoast and WordPress quite some time in the past and this problem has never occured to me.
- Subheading distribution: One section of your text is longer than 300 words and is not divided by subheadings. Add subheadings to improve readability.
- Paragraph length: 4 of your paragraphs contain more than the recommended 150 words. Make your paragraphs shorter!
I have these announcement on several pages:
https://nailartclub.nl/
https://nailartclub.nl/behandelingen/
https://nailartclub.nl/nagelstylisten/
It must have something to do with the columns used to build the page. My thinking is, if Yoast says my readibilty (red face) is poor. Then Google will think so too. I need to fix this! - Allright thanks again, hope you can help me with this one.

Hello Huub,
Yoast SEO analyzes the default WordPress content areas like the title, URL, the main content box (WordPress editor). If you are adding your content through other plugin or theme content boxes (as most page builders do), Yoast SEO may not be able to detect it by default. Currently, we are compatible with the Elementor page builder. The Yoast SEO Elementor integration is free to use for everyone; no premium or add-on is required for core functionality.
Since you’re using another page builder (Salient theme with WP Bakery), please understand that page builders commonly use a custom editor designed by their team. Because plugins rely on the default editor, some page builders make the data entered into their editor available in the default editor. In these cases, Yoast SEO will see and analyze the content as if created with the default editor. When this is not the case, an integration feature must be available to parse the page builder content into Yoast SEO for analysis.
It’s like opening a room to find a safe inside it. Unless you have the code to unlock the safe, you can only see the inside of the room. To get the code to open the safe, you must contact the person who set the unlock code. We have tried to automatically unlock and parse content from other plugins and themes with inferior results in the past. Therefore, we opted to provide an API that developers can use to unlock their content and pass it to our page analysis.
If you are using a plugin or theme that doesn’t send or incorrectly sends their content to our page analysis, please reach out to the author or developer regarding the integration feature. Our development team provides information about creating a custom integration here. In the meantime, you can create a draft post without using the page builder and copy the content section from the frontend of your site into the default editor. The Yoast analysis will run on the draft’s copy of the content so you can review and change the content in both editors. Once you’ve optimized the content, you can discard the draft copy.
Although our plugin does not detect your content and shows an incorrect analysis report, this does not affect how search engines crawl and analyze your site. Search engines process the front end of your site and will detect your content.
Thanks Maybellyne for the detailed answer. Insightful and helpful!
