Need help changing permalinks

I have a new WP site with a blog attached. When I publish both blog posts and articles, the permalinks have a lot of nonsensical characters in them that I’d like to remove. I’d like to be able to manually set my permalinks to read something like this:
site-name/site-category/site-sub-category/page-or-blog-post-title

I know that with earlier versions of WP, there was an option right below the permalink to change it to whatever you wanted. I always used this option to help with optimization. However, I’m now using version 3.0.1, and it has a “change permalink” button that takes me to a new page for customizing permalinks. But I don’t understand the instructions. I tried changing a blog post link to the way I wanted it to read, but it messed up my other permalinks, so I had to change it back.

If someone could walk me through how to do this, I’d really appreciate it! Thanks.

In settings permalinks you can set custom structure the way you want and when you save permalinks will update your .htaccess file.

Sorry, I’m probably making this hard, but I still don’t understand what I’m supposed to type in that custom URL box. Do I literally type in /%category%/%postname%/ if that’s the structure I want to use? Or do I type in the actual names of the categories and post names that should go in those spaces? I’m a creative, not a programmer, so this is like Greek to me! Also, can I set a different custom permalink for each page, or will that happen automatically once I set one of these up?

WordPress 3.0.1 still has the option to set the url manually for each individual post, it is under the url with an ‘edit’ button.

You can enter this literally into the Permalinks settings page:

/%post_id%/%category%/%postname%

WordPress will then automatically construct the urls according to the above variables, filling in post id number, the category name and post title keywords whenever you create a new post. You still have the option to override the default url that is generated at the time of authoring a post.

Hi Joe, I just followed your instructions below, but now when I try to access the page, I’m getting a broken link notice and the page won’t display. What am I doing wrong?

Also, there is no “edit” button on the version of WP I am using.

Wait, I found the “edit” button…I hadn’t clicked “edit” on the previous page, so it wasn’t showing up. But I’m still getting broken link notifications on everything but my home page. Help!

Can you recheck that url as I can not go on it gives error.

That’s my point. I changed the permalink structure as Joe said to, and now I’m getting an error message. The permalinks are now as I wanted them, but the page won’t display. Does anyone know how to fix that?

Are you sure as I am getting error as if domain name is wrong if domain right then i would get 404 error.
Recheck if the spelling is right

From what I understand, you never put the domain name in the custom URL structure box, right? Here is what I put in there:

/%post_id%/%category%/%post_name%

Do I need to add something else?

I am saying is the url u=you have in post above gives me error I can not open your website. I am getting from google that the link is broken

I see that you have the permalink as it should be and when save it should update your .htaccess file to changes.
