If you have not done anything to the website (also no plugin auto-updates), then it could be your server issue (if you are not using any SMTP providers to send emails). Try contacting your hosting support and have them test your server email function.

For what you described, please be sure that the Optimize Email Sending option is toggled to the OFF position.
