I would like to move my website from one domain to another. Both are self hosted domains. I want everything to stay exactly the same, except for the domain.

I installed WP on my new domain and simply copied all of the files from /public_html/olddomain to /public_html/newdomain via FTP. Everything looks great, but I have one concern.

When I log into the admin panel of my new domain, it redirects the admin panel for my old domain (If i change something on the home page, it actually updates both domains) I would like to know if the following steps will be appropriate:

    – Change the URL within the General settings to my new domain.
    – Run URL Updater.
    – Place a 301 redirect on my old domain.

Does that sound like the appropriate course of action? Will external links to my old domain redirect to the new URLs?

This all seems very easy to me, but I think it might be because I don’t know what the hell I am doing. Thanks for any help you might be able to provide!

Thanks for the links. I have actually read both of these and – Unfortunately – I just don’t understand these instructions, which is why I was trying to explain what I thought I should do in the above post. I just need to know if I am way off the mark.

    Thanks again, though.

Can I follow the directions for “Moving WordPress to a New Server?”

    Changing_The_Site_URL might be a lot less work…

You have to move the database also.
Login to your server, go to PhPMyadmin and look for your database.
Change the url under Options and Home without / on the end. That’s it.

Thank you so much for the responses. I really appreciate it.

I know I sound like a nervous nelly here, but I want to just verify I understand the above instructions.

    – Move the database (which means copy all the files from my old domain’s folder to my new domain’s folder).
    – Login to PhPMyadmin and make those edits to the database (which I researched and actually think I understand).

Is that really it? Will I still need to run the “update URLS” plugin and change the “WordPress Address” and “Site Address” under General settings.

    Thanks again for the help.

    Hi krandcr

I’m building a new self hosted WordPress.org site to replace an existing site & can’t afford to to take down the existing Flash site (http://www.dougsegal.com) while I develop the new one so am building the new one on a “holding” domain (http://www.corporateentertaimentlondon.co.uk/).

Like you I am worried sick that when the time comes I will have spent hours, days & weeks developing my new site only to mess up when changing it to http://www.dougsegal.com

If you manage to migrate your site successfully please would you be kind enough to publish a step by step guide here?
Because, like you, I’m finding everything already published baffling for someone with limited technical knowledge & sometimes contradictory.

Wishing you good luck with the move.

We did move our site successfully and it was a piece of cake. I don;t understand why all the directions are SOO confusing for non-tech people. I found this website: http://www.mohitaneja.com/moving-wordpress-from-one-domain-to-another/

The instructions a re extremely clear and easy to follow. I hope this helps. The only steps that are missing here (they may not pertain to you) are – once you have followed the instructions to move your site – you may need to:

    * Set-up a 301 redirect. (Your web host can help you with this if you don;t know how to do it. I have Bluehost and they were very helpful.
    * Download and run the “update URL” plug-in. This just allows you to replace any instance of your old URL (within you site) to your new one.

I hope that helps! Good luck!

    Thank you!
