Is someone using my website info address for spam?

Hello — I’ve been getting a lot of “Mail delivery failed: returning message to sender” messages on a barely under construction WordPress website. The website is not sending out any messages and the returned message is definitely spam. Has someone hi-jacked my contact email address from my website to send out spam? Is that possible?

We have no way of telling if you email has been hi-jacked.

Thank you, t-p. I will look into those. Since posting my question I have changed the password on that account and suspended the ability of that address to send messages. We’ll see if that works.

Most times it’s not your email address that’s been hacked or compromised. The vast majority of the times what’s happening is that the SPAM’ers are just using that email address as the sending address, and that can be done by anyone without anything to do with your email systems or website at all.

For that, there’s really nothing that you can do to stop them because it’s nothing to do with your systems. The best that you can do is set up email authentication with your email service provider and see if that helps a little bit.
