After a couple disastrous upgrade attempts, I tried to roll back to version 2.0.5, but now my wp-config file seems to be faulty, since I get this error message when I try to access my website or the WP backend:

    Error establishing a database connection

This either means that the username and password information in your wp-config.php file is incorrect or we can’t contact the database server at localhost. This could mean your host’s database server is down.

Are you sure you have the correct username and password?
Are you sure that you have typed the correct hostname?
Are you sure that the database server is running?
If you’re unsure what these terms mean you should probably contact your host. If you still need help you can always visit the WordPress Support Forums.

Any help, please, on what to do next?

What version did you rollback from? How did you rollback (restore from a backup, replace files, etc)? Have you contacted your hosting provider to ensure that the database server is online?

    Version 2.0.4

I copied and pasted the existing files that I had originally installed from and saved on my harddrive. By FTP, I first deleted the admin and include directories, deleted the themes and plugins from the content directory, and then copied over the admin and include directories, all the files in the root of the wordpress directory, and the plugins and themes folders from the content directory. Then edited the config sample file to use my database name, username, and password. Think that’s it. Did I forgot anything or do something wrong?

Since you only restored the files and not the database, I’m concerned by the fact that you’re now running an updated database with an older version’s files. This can sometimes be problematic.

Contact your hosting provider and make sure that the database server is online and that you’ve entered the right details in the wp-config.php file.

Will do. In the meantime, can I ask why you say that the database is updated? When I tried twice to upgrade to higher versions, I followed the same procedure I described above. What I did didn’t touch the database, did it?

If you ran /wp-admin/upgrade.php (which is the last step of the upgrade process), the database was upgraded to be compatible with the version of the files that you had uploaded at that time.

For example, if you uploaded the WP 2.5 files and ran /wp-admin/upgrade.php, your database was upgraded to be compatible with WP 2.5.

I never got that far – I was never able to access the wordpress backend after copying over everything. If I even tried to load any wp-admin pages (or my website, period), I would get the white screen of death with warnings and fatal error messages. So I think my database should be intact and unchanged.

In that case, the database should be fine.
