No, you can upload all the files to one directory. you can then link to these from different posts in different categories, if that’s what you want.
It is not clear why you mean to do by mixing categories with uploads. Categories and sub categories are for posts (Articles, if you will), not for uploads.
What do you mean when you say you need to upload files into sub categories? The completeness of the solution depends on the completeness of the problem definition 😉
When dealing with images I’m using IImage browser – the reason is I needed to seperate my directories due to the large volume of images. So the structure is as follows:
Main: Covers
Sub: Film
Sub: Games
Sub: Music
Sub: Books
Main: Screenshots
Sub: Games
Sub: Film
I can see a similar system being required for things like movie files and music files, simply because organisation is very important for large amounts of files and sticking them all in one folder willy nilly is just a horrible experience. Each folder is representing a category by that example, and all of those reside within the root folder I created called images. Just makes the whole experience a lot more user friendly.
I guess that’s what he’s after but for media related files rather than image,s but he hasn’t specified the reason for this as you state. Once that’s explained perhaps it can be built upon 🙂
You are pretty much correct. I Want to upload some word documents and autocad files and misc. coursework from my college career. So it would be a main category of the Semester then subcategory would be the class..
IE.
Fall 2005 Semester
– AutoCAD
Drawing1.dwg
Drawing2.dwg
Drawing3.dwg
– Calculus
Project1.doc
Project2.doc
Project3.doc
So the semester is the main category, the course title is the subcategory and I want to upload files to the subcategory. The files would be in a variety of formats but mostly word/excel/autocad files.
You would be much better off using the page fuction in WP 1.5.
Have the main page “Calculus” and sub-pages under it “projects 1,2, and 3.
Or have one page and links to separate files you upload to a central directory.
I thought of that. Thats basically how I am doing it now. Im more looking for a way to automate it. I dont want to have to upload the files through FTP and then manually add links. Im looking for a plugin that will have a form field to upload the file and a form field to enter a file title and then an option to specify what category I want it on.
Sounds like there is nothing like this out there
