• Hello group,

I’ve spent several hours looking for a way to do this, but I’m not getting the answers I’m looking for. Here’s what I’d like to create and I’m hoping someone can give some direction.

I am building a WordPress site for my company (I’m fairly new to WP – just started using it this year) and I’d like to provide a “Dealer’s Only” access area where we would make new announcements, have dealer-only downloads available with price sheets, etc., and offer a dealer’s only newsletter. I’d like to give permissions ONLY to the dealers we manually setup with their dealer number as their username and a password we send out. This way our competiton won’t have (easy) access to it. It would provide a place where our dealers can download updated PDF price pages, etc.

Are there plugins or services that can itegrate with WP to do this and if so, which ones would you recommend?

  • just a suggestion but I would install wp in a different folder and link (or not) to it from main site and make it a members only site
that way you can have different themes and plugins from main site

I suppose I could install a separate WP installation as a members-only site altogether. This first installation will be our main site actually. I see several plugins for members-only, but do they assign a username and password based on what the user inputs or is there a way I can manually accept or reject them or put them in based on our dealer numbers?

you can create users and assign passwords yourself to be more secure
not sure of a plugin that will let them do that
maybe someone will have a better idea

There are several ways to do it. You can make password protected pages. Or you can create pages and hide them from the menu. Plugins like WP Hide Post work good for that. Or combination. By using sub pages and usinhg the main as a menu page it can look very good indeed. Have done that a number of times myself.
