I’m having difficulties adding thumbnail images to my post in the Thesis template, but that’s not why I’m here, it is more to do with how WordPress handles images.

After spending quite a bit of time on trying to insert these images I decided to start from the beginning. Went into my ftp program and deleted all the images in my upload/images folder and went to my media library and deleted everything there that I wanted to use as thumbnails.

Having done that I uploaded my images via Upload New Media section and yes every thing appeared to be fine.

However I then went back to my ftp program, refreshed it only to be presented with three different files for each image I had uploaded via wordpress e.g. one of the images I uploaded was called travel-writing.jpg in my uploads/images folder it measured 595×265 but when I check my ftp I now have three of these images: the one I uploaded, one at 300×135 and one at 150×150. The image displayed in 150×150

Can’t get my head around this could someone explain.

Another question springs to mind. Is there any difference uploading the images via WordPress or just ftp them from your hard drive to your blog site?

WordPress automatically generates a large, medium, and thumbnail version of the uploaded images. In this case, the original image was smaller than the standard large size, so it only generated a medium and thumbnail version.

WordPress catalogues all media during the upload process, but only if you use the built-in uploader. If you upload via FTP, the files will certainly be on your server, but they won’t be viewable in WP’s media library.
