HTTP ERROR 500 – PHP Fatal error: Allowed memory size of XX bytes exhausted

Only the homepage appears to be getting this 500 error. I deactivated all plugins except WooCommerce and the issue persisted. We already had the following code in the wp-config.php file and I’ve confirmed that it’s still there:

The error message you’re seeing PHP Fatal error: Allowed memory size of XX bytes exhausted typically means that your website is reaching the maximum memory limit that’s been allocated to it.

We already had the following code in the wp-config.php file and I’ve confirmed that it’s still there

define('WP_MEMORY_LIMIT', '256M');
define( 'WP_MAX_MEMORY_LIMIT', '512M' );

To clarify, did you increase these values to the above, or where these values already set?

Can you try increasing the WP memory limit to 1024M and see if this makes any difference?

If not, can you please share the full error message you are receiving, including the exhausted value, as this seems to be missing from your post.

Lastly, can you please share a copy of any fatal error logs found under WooCommerce > Status > Logs.

Thank you! That got the homepage up and I was able to see that a products shortcode was pulling in hundreds of products to the homepage causing the memory issue.

I’m glad to hear that increasing the WP memory limit helped to get your homepage up and running again. The issue you described with the product’s shortcode pulling in hundreds of products to the homepage is likely what was causing the memory exhaustion issue.

When you have a large number of products being loaded on a single page, it can consume a significant amount of memory, especially if those products have numerous attributes or variations.

To prevent this issue from recurring, you might want to consider limiting the number of products that the shortcode pulls in. You can do this by adding a ‘limit’ attribute to your shortcode.
