Opening the settings

My largest site has There are 77 albums and 177531 photos in the system., no problem so it must be the number of albums being too large for a selectionbox for the photo of the day setting.

Try this: Advanced settings -> Admin -> VI -> Item 6: Photo admin max albums
set it to a value no larger than 500. Instead of a selectionbox, you will see an edit field for entering the album ids when there are more than the selected number

Do you see the tabs and the spinner before waiting infinitely?
And: do you use the photo of the day feature?
