• Hello all, I am a co-founder of an association, and one of my co-founders got us an instant domain through 1and1. I think this only allows me access to their easy-website-builder program, which is not at all what I want to do. I want to have the domain I reserved through 1and1 become a wordpress site, and so I signed up with Dreamhost. I have done the one-click installation of WordPress for my site, but beyond that I have no idea how to make the three things “talk” to one another. Can anyone help me out? Thanks a lot!

I’m not sure how this “instant domain” works, but if it works like a traditional domain, you need to point its DNS records to Dreamhost’s nameservers. The process is different for every domain registrar, so I recommend contacting 1&1 first.

Help is at hand I’m with 1 and 1 too 😉

First you need to find out what IP address Dreamhost have given you.

Then login to your 1and1 admin panel. Click on your package, then go to Domains, which should show you the instant domain. Currently it’s pointing at a server at 1and1 to display a holding page.

Tick the domain in question and go to DNS – Edit DNS Settings.

At the bottom under Advanced DNS Settings, check the “Other IP address” box and type in your Dreamhost IP. Click save.

Now your domain should point at your WordPress package with Dreamhost. Note that this can take about 30mins or longer to work properly, sometimes it works instantaneously.

    Good luck 😉

you can install wordpress on 1and1. why do you need dreamhost to install wordpress on?
