So my current wordpress.com blog is X but I’m going to change the name get hosting and go to wordpress.org. Do I still need to purchase wordpress’s domain name registration?

That isn’t necessary, but if you want to redirect your old wordpress.com blog to your new WordPress blog, you’ll have to sign up for domain mapping:

http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/redirecting-your-blog/

Ok cool, I don’t think my blog is popular enough to matter so I prob won’t map it. I’ll just get the new name and when i download .org all my info should transfer. I haven’t promoted it heavily yet so I should be alright!
