I am getting ready to finally install wordpress 3.1 on my self-hosted site from a long outdated version I’ve been running. In the installation instructions, this paragraph confuses me slightly
“Be careful when you come to copying the wp-content directory. You should make sure that you only copy the files from this directory, rather than replacing your existing wp-content directory. This is where your themes and plugins live, so you will want to keep them. If you have customized the default or classic themes without renaming them, make sure not to overwrite those files, otherwise you will lose your changes. (Though you might want to compare them for new features or fixes..)”
The wp-content folder in the new version to be uploaded includes an index.php file and two folders, Plugins and Themes. Do I copy these over to the web host or not?

  • What version of WordPress are you currently running? Are you trying to retain all of your current content?

A very early version, 2.3 or something like that (is there I place I can find out). And yes, maintaining current content is important.

In that case, you can’t just upgrade straight to 3.0.1. You need to carry out a series off smaller upgrades:

    2.3 -> 2.5 -> 2.7 -> 2.9 -> 3.0.1

Ensure that all plugins are deactivated before you begin and switch to the default theme. Also make a database backup before each upgrade.

Ack! Are there services or people who do this sort of this for a fee? This sounds scary.

Yes – there are people you can pay to take care of this for you. Try posting something on http://jobs.wordpress.net/

Thanks. I’ll see if can find someone affordable or, god help me, try and do the whole thing myself.

One last question: If I try this myself, where do I go to find the earlier upgrades? Only 3.1 is linked from my dashboard.

You can find earlier versions of WordPress in the release archive here.

And no need to be afraid of the upgrade. Once you do it once, its the same over and over.

Once you get to 2.7 (I think) or thereabouts, wordpress has an auto-upgrader availabale in the admin menu

I suppose I’ll end up doing in myself. The site with earlier versions says all are dangerous to use aside from the first one. Does this matter to me.

And, most importantly, how do I figure out which version I am currently running? Thanks. Sorry to be such a pain.

it doesn’t matter. They are dangerous to use becaus ethey have security risks. Which is why you are upgrading among other things

run your url through ismyblogworking.com to see the version easily

Just make sure you have backups before you start… of your files, and your database. Soooooooo important, can’t be stressed enough.

As long as you have backups…pretty much no matter what goes south, we can recover!

Thanks. It shows I’m running 2.5.1 so I only have to go through three upgrades as I understand what you’ve both told me. I appreciate all the help.
