Hello Team,
We have installed Yoast Plugin & trying to submit our
sitemap_index.xmlfile. Unfortunately, every time it showing us “couldn’t fetch” error. You can check this screenshot: https://snipboard.io/Bg61EA.jpg
When I check “Open Sitemap” under “sitemap_index.xml” it navigates me to the right page. So, may I know why Google still could not fetch it?

Hello Juan,
Thanks for using the Yoast SEO plugin.
Unfortunately, Google doesn’t provide any more information about why they cannot read the sitemap. The sitemap loads correctly in the browser.
- Are you submitting the correct sitemap URL of
sitemap_index.xml? - Does Google see the sitemap when checking the URL in the Structured Data Testing Tool?
- Does the URL inspection tool‘s live test show any errors with the sitemap URL? If yes, please resolve the errors.
- Did you submit the sitemap to the Google Search Console profile that matches the preferred URL format? Your site has HTTPS/non-WWW format
If you’ve checked everything above, please contact Google for further assistance here.
Hi Maybellyne,
Unfortunately, Google doesn’t provide any more information about why they cannot read the sitemap. The sitemap loads correctly in the browser.
-> In that case, how we could index our sitemap? & how could we know why Google is not fetching our Yoast sitemap?- Are you submitting the correct sitemap URL of
sitemap_index.xml?
-> Yes (thttps://snipboard.io/Bg61EA.jpg) - Does Google see the sitemap when checking the URL in the Structured Data Testing Tool?

Google doesn’t provide any more information about why they cannot read the sitemap
Google responds with ‘couldn’t fetch’; that’s not helpful enough. That’s what I meant by Google not providing information about why they can’t read the sitemap
Does the URL inspection tool‘s live test show any errors with the sitemap URL?
What you tested is your homepage URL, and you can see that page was fetched. No referring sitemap means the URL wasn’t discovered from your sitemap but elsewhere on the web

Your post back then was about sitemap.xml, which Yoast SEO doesn’t generate. Also, sitemaps couldn’t fetch is a recurrent issue posted in the Google Search Central Help Community, and it’s believed to be an issue with Google Search Console. You can search the community yourself.
If your sitemaps load fine in the browser, the problem is with Google, not your sitemap file. Some other users in the community have reported success when they submit the non-pretty permalink version of the sitemap: https://domain.com/?sitemap=1
Hello Maybellyne,
We already redirected
sitemap.xmltositemap_index.xmlbut when I addedsitemap.xmlin GSC, it successfully fetched. You can check the screenshot (https://snipboard.io/0FewUK.jpg). I’m not sure why it showing Oct 22, 2022 under last read.I also checked this sitemap.xml file. It showing me wrong information https://snipboard.io/92XNAh.jpg.
We successfully resolved our website & server side cache as well. Still the problem is same.
May I know why GSC is still fetching wrong
sitemap.xmlfile even if we have redirected it tositemap_index.xmlfile.Thank you,
I’m not sure why it showing Oct 22, 2022 under last read.
That’s the last time Google crawled the sitemap, though you re-submitted it on May 30, 2023. The success status doesn’t mean all URLs in the sitemap have been crawled all over again. It’s a status to acknowledge your submission not the status of crawling. It has also been said in the community that Google Search Console shows ‘Pending’ as ‘couldnt fetch’ incorrectly. Meaning, it’s not that it can’t fetch the sitemap; crawling is just pending
May I know why GSC is still fetching wrong
sitemap.xmlfile even if we have redirected it tositemap_index.xmlfileThere’s an expected 301 redirect from https://anbstudio.asia/sitemap.xml to https://anbstudio.asia/sitemap_index.xml. Those individual sitemaps in your screenshot don’t exist; Google shows you the status from the last time /sitemap.xml/ was crawled.
Also, submitting multiple sitemap indexes to the console is not advisable; you must stick to one. That’s why I recommended submitting the non-pretty permalink version of the sitemap – https://anbstudio.asia/?sitemap=1 and see if that makes a difference
Hello @maybellyne,
We have already redirected https://anbstudio.asia/sitemap.xml to https://anbstudio.asia/sitemap_index.xml.
Our team also checked “https://anbstudio.asia/?sitemap=1” but it gives us same error.
So, is there any way to resolve this issue because it affects our performance milestone.
Thank you
Hello Juan,
As I mentioned before, it’s known that couldn’t fetch could mean pending. So please allow a few more days since you just resubmitted https://anbstudio.asia/?sitemap=1”.
