    Hi,

We have a website that is used by a multilingual public. When setting the chatbot we chose one language (portuguese), and it always anwers in that language, even if the question is posed in another. We have tried prompting it to only answer in the language the user does, but it still uses the default. How can we change that?

    Hi @massalo

As a potential solution, I recommend changing the chatbot’s language to English and testing it with questions in different languages. This may help the chatbot identify and respond in the language that the user is using.

Please try this solution and let me know if it resolves the issue.

    Hi Senol,

Thank you for the quick response. Your tip did work.. Only it gets stuck on the language…

Steps: I changed settings from Portuguese to English, then typed a question in French and got an answer in French (which is what we wanted), but then all messages stayed in that language even if we sent questions in a different language, during that session.

To give you further context. The website is in PortuguesePT and that’s the main language our readers use, also embeddings and context are 100% in PT, so the bot definitely does the job.

The problem is that we have a considerable readership that uses English(EN) and French(FR) so we wanted then to be able to use the three languages interchangeably, an ability that is present in chatGPT.

The bot understands them all but only answers either in PT (which you fixed), or stays in character with the first language the user asks his first question.

Not sure I made myself clear with the explanation and apologise if not.

    Hi @massalo

If you’re testing the bot with the “remember conversation” setting enabled, this might mean the previous conversations are being saved in cookies, which could potentially confuse the bot.

To resolve this issue, I suggest you try clearing your cache and cookies and then test the bot again. Alternatively, you can disable the “remember conversation” setting and check if the issue persists. It’s worth noting that normal users might not encounter the same problem, as they are less likely to frequently change languages during a conversation, which could be causing the bot to get confused in your case.

I hope this helps! Let me know if you have any more questions or concerns.
