• Resolved SIN SA

    (@sinwpwebsite)

Our website was built by a third party. We don’t have ongoing support from them. After one of the WordPress updates some parts of our website started showing text in square brackets, e.g. [product_category_list_standard] but we don’t know how to edit or remove them. I’ve tried searching Google and this forum but I’m not even sure what to use as search terms so I haven’t had any luck.

Can someone please point me in the right direction?

  • What you are seeing are shortcodes. They are a bit of text like that signified by the [] brackets that tells WordPress to display some additional content.

What seems to have happened is that something in your theme or a plugin has changed and removed those shortcodes. It’s also possible that a plugin that provides those shortcodes has been deactivated so it won’t work with them any more.

If you have your theme up to date, and all of the plugins activated, then I’d suggest that you think about hiring someone that knows what to look for to go through your theme/site and see what’s happened to it. Unfortunately without access to the full code it’s impossible to diagnose from here.

So there’s no centralised area in WordPress for shortcode, or common places to check?

No. Any shrotcode can be added, or over-ridden by any theme or plugin. Each theme/plugin can do pretty much anything that they want to, so there’s no centralised area to check. You could try something like this plugin to view what is there, but you probably won’t get much information from it.
