• Recently on one of the sites I manage the option to use “Custom Fields” on the post editor page has vanished.

I do not use Advanced Custom Fields on this site. I have tried disabling ALL plugins, issue persists. I have tried switching themes to a default “Twenty” theme, issue persists. I have disabled all plugins while using a default theme, and the issue still persists. I have entered debug mode and see no issues and I have installed and tried using the Healthcheck/Troubleshoot plugin and still nothing.

I have been searching for similar reports but cannot find anything similar.

I know that past custom fields that I have created and used are still active because I can see that content is still there on the site, however the ability to access, edit, or create new fields is lost to me.

    What am I missing here?

    Sorry for the slow reply.

This is regarding the default block editor (Gutenberg) for the default “post” post type? Other post types may intentionally not support custom fields. Other editors might not support custom fields.

But for the default post and editor, the custom fields panel might simply be hidden by your editor preferences. Use the 3 dot icon at upper right and pick Preferences. Go to the Panels side tab. The slider switch for custom fields should be towards the right for ‘On’.
