Woocommerce breaking at CHECKOUT

The cart seems to be breaking at CHECKOUT. everyone is getting a “COULD NOT RETRIEVE ORDER.” message. it was replicated for me. this started happening after i updated “WooCommerce PayPal Payments”. i deactivated all non Woo plugins and the problem persists. Losing sales as people get weary with checkout bugs. 🙁

ive had a persistent notice about missing ‘wp_wc_product_download_directories’ table for quite some time. Searching saw that it seems to have been a problem with an earlier woo update and it was supposed to self-correct in a future update but never did for me. i still get the notice but have had no problems with checkout until now. dont know if its related.

found this error in an actual order:

“Could not retrieve order. OrderEndpoint.php:459 Order status changed from Pending payment to Failed.”

this was when someone just tried to bypass CHECKOUT and instead clicked the Paypal button directly below CHECKOUT button in the cart.
