Thanks for using Discussion Board. Can you please confirm if the “Allow people to submit comments on new posts” was enabled? If yes, please try to disable the “Comment author must have a previously approved comment”.

Hi I have the same issue.
I create a testing topic as an wp-admin.
I register in the website using the incognito browser and my role is spectator and even change to participant but still I cannot comment on the topic.

Thanks for reaching out and for using WPDB! Can you please confirm if the “Allow people to submit comments on new posts” was enabled/checked? You can check it by navigating to settings > Discussions.
If yes, can you please review the theme’s settings? Some of the themes have an option of disable/enable the comment section.

I just tested the WP Discussion Board with the Hello Elementor theme, and I have no issues with commenting.
A couple of things to check:
1. You must be login
2. On settings > discussion > Default post settings; the Allow people to submit comments on new posts checkbox must be enabled.
