if there is a way I can refresh the media library
The media uploader is actually a combined uploading a cataloguing system. As you’ve noticed, anything that hasn’t been uploaded via WP’s uploader is not recognized by the media library because it wasn’t added to the catalogue. I’m not aware of any method to re-catalogue the physical library.
upload media enmasse
When uploading media, try the Flash uploader instead of the Browser uploader. This will allow you to upload multiple files simultaneously.
Yeah, I noticed that the library was actually catalogued. That’s totally awesome, I wish we could update the catalogue is all!
Hmm, I thought I’d seen the multiple uploader thing before, but I didn’t see it when I was actually looking this time. I’ll check again.
I’m afraid I’m not seeing it my man. The Flash will put them in a queue, but you still need to load the queue one by one.
The Flash is a lot better than a poke in the eye (or the browser uploader) though.
The Flash will put them in a queue, but you still need to load the queue one by one.
If by that you mean that it selects multiple files but still uploads them one-by-one, that’s true of FTP as well. Even though you can select and upload multiple files via FTP, they’re still uploaded one-by-one.
You’re totally right.
I didn’t see it before, the interface is just a little bit on the counterintuitive side and I’m just not that attentive sometimes I guess. You can indeed select multiple files.
Pluralizing one word is kind of a subtle indicator of its capabilities. But, now I know, and “knowing is half the battle”
If you prefer using FTP, you may find the following plugin useful.

Thanks, Mark! That’s definitely one to keep on file for later use.
